CURLS is a film about a young Black girl who wants to look her best for school. Part of her overall look is her hair. It takes a lot of time and effort to maintain, and she wants to make sure it looks good. Her confidence is at an all time high and she's happy with the style she's chosen but, her principal thinks otherwise.
Our hair texture defies gravity, and does things that other hair types don't, and because of that we don't fit the norm.
Katherine Williams and Chumani Bowser are taking this opportunity to create a short animated film that visually shows the struggles of having black hair. This will take place in a school setting because we want people to see how much hair has an effect on black people's identity. This doesn't start when we're adults, its begins while we're young.
